Fulton Missouri 1920 1960 History in Stories and Photographs Volume 2 Carolyn Paul Branch 9781502731555 Books
I am not a history buff, but I read this whole book in two days and loved its surprises and sense of time passing.Mrs. Branch takes the newspaper history of Fulton Missouri from 1920 - 1960, and follows themes through the decades. She picked stories that had compelling problems, like the tourists from Columbia who had to have a farmer drag them out of the mud hole for money, and as a normal thing that drivers just dealt with in the springtime; or about the city's first African American cop; to the rise of the automobile. I read with interest throughout the book the development of the interstate highway, and the way it affected citizens lives. And how easy it was to get a driver's license when they were first issued. I had no idea about the factory scandal, or what the town would have been like with every person having their own outhouse. This was a glimpse into a history I had never before witnessed.
Mrs. Branch really knows how to take the stories that were important to Callaway county at that time, and are yet still relevant today. She spotlights stories that are hard to imagine existing in the modern world. I mean, insecticide infused children's wallpaper? Wow.
I spent a lot of time telling my husband, "Look what happened in Fulton...." and showing him the pictures. It was a captivating book, I highly recommend it!
