I have to admit that at first I wasn't too sure if I would finish this book because for me it was a rather show beginning. However, I kept reading and I am glad I did because the story definitely picked up. I like how the author incorporated the history of the Maori. Ironically, I visited New Zealand a few years ago and I absolutely fell in love with Dunedin. I have always said that I would love to live there. The author definitely captured the quaint essence of Dunedin. Reading about it brought back many wonderful memories.

There are some grammatical errors but not so many that they are a distraction to the story. The only other issue I had was that the main character seemed completely ignorant regarding those who betrayed him, yet he is suppose to have had these long term relationships with them. I would think that during all that time he would have gotten some sense of their true nature.

I did feel as though the story isn't complete because there are definitely (at least for me) unanswered questions. Perhaps this story will be continued in another book, or perhaps be incorporated as an intro into a new story.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and I definitely recommend it for the historical aspects alone.

The Spanish Helmet Dr Matthew Cameron Series Book 1 edition by Greg Scowen Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This is a nicely written tale of archaeology but tarted up with politics and conspiracy. The characters are well done and I liked the way the author switched between the journal of the Spanish explorers and the events in the present day (of the story). I also liked how the author manipulated how some characters changed from threatening to benevolent and vice versa.

I did notice an apparent error but this didn't play a major role in the story. (How is the agent following Matt and Aimee able to hear their conversations after Matt has removed the transmitter?)

An enjoyable read with a lot of expressions and words unfamiliar to us Americans but this added to the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Spanish Helmet. I liked the blending of the 16th century Spanish journal which paints a picture of NZ before it was settled by the British, and the modern day attempt to discover the "truth" of the Spanish exploration, which paints beautiful vignettes of various parts of NZ today. All this is linked together with a plausible conspiracy, intriguing mystery and gripping suspense.

I grew up in NZ and was taught the traditional stories of the exploration of New Zealand, but this book has now left me wondering "I wonder who else found their way to these distant shores and when?"

Warning to all expat Kiwis, this book is likely to invoke feelings of homesickness ;-).

Overall the book is well-written but some of the transitions from scene to scene were a bit abrupt which dropped it to a four star experience for me.
I really enjoyed the romantic theme in this book and the whole "purple jersey" angle was amusing and real. It was a great way for the reader to learn more of the character of Aimee.
Loved the interludes with the Spanish Sailors and the historical premise. Left me wondering if this could have actually happened in the history of my country, (NZ) and then, "Why not?" In this book, it all seems perfectly plausible.
The story gripped me right from the start. I liked the characters including the shadowy and intriguing Hemi.
It also got me interested to have a closer look at the city of Dunedin and its surrounds. I got the same good feeling last time I went there, that this book illustrates, but my visit was too brief.
The only reason I withheld the fifth star was related to one or two minor incidents in the plot that didn't seem to quite fit, but these were very minor and I strongly recommend this book. I've found myself thinking about it a lot in retrospect and describing its events to people who might never read it.
Scowen has created a very exciting story from the mix of "evidence", hypothesis, and hyperbole that is the history of New Zealand before 1769. The alternating chapters of possible 16th Century Spanish discovery and an equally plausible present day story are knitted together very well. As with history everywhere, the most easily accessible "truths" come from amongst the records of the victorious and not from those of the defeated. Taking this factor into account this fiction builds a believable plot.
I loved the way Scowen blended together the "known" and the theoretical in creating this realistically paced thriller. He wasted little of his wide cultural experiences either, as he even weaves in some recently acquired knowledge of Switzerland.
I include here a paragraph of background to help those unfamiliar with New Zealand gain a feel for this book's foundations. I would be distressed by the opinion that any of this is anywhere near being a spoiler. There were quite possibly some "fair-skinned tribes" in NZ before "discovery" by the Dutch and English. There are all sorts of diverse and variably weak bits of real evidence for such a theory. Timelines are very unclear. This is unsurprising considering that so much of what we do know comes from the oral histories of the Maori, and from a strange mix of singularly inconsequential archaeological inconsistencies and theories. However, Scowen has used a nice mix of what I assume are genuine, though perhaps minority, Maori tribal memories and the thin presently available archaeological evidence to great effect. That in this temperate zone of the southern hemisphere there were "fair" skinned peoples long before the arrival of Europeans seems biologically unsurprising. There is also a probability that a few Europeans arrived well before 18th and 19th Century waves of modern Pakeha. Possibly there were enough whites to have given rise to a small fairer-skinned assimilated population. I was pleased to have this information prior to reading the book, as I'm sure it only added to my rapid immersion in the story.
The mixed bonds and frictions within close and tribal families provide the glue to many aspects of the plot. There is plenty of love, hate and drama to add spice to history and archaeological intrigue. Good, bad and variously flawed individuals experience all the classic ingredients of love, sexual tension, and violence, turning this mix of historical and contemporary fiction into a great read.
The possible voyage of the real San Lesmes and the main character's modern fictional tour of New Zealand may almost have been designed to give NZ Tourism a boost. Scowen's book is very readable. Without a series of inevitable distractions I would have had no trouble in finishing The Spanish Helmet in one read. I look forward to his next book.
