Coming after ARABELLA OF MARS, this second volume in the series is not just a letdown but a major disappointment. The novelty of the setting and situations made the first novel a delight throughout, but this time around that feature is necessarily absent, and there's not a lot else to keep the reader diverted. For some reason, Arabella herself is a much more annoying character in this adventure. Furthermore, because she is kept "out of the loop" by most other characters, and the reader knows only what Arabella knows, very little really happens during the entire middle third of the novel. Walk-on appearances by Napoleon, Lord Nelson and Robert Fulton don't help much, and the "revolutionary invention" Fulton is creating for Napoleon is not even remotely plausible, even in the very different universe of these adventures. Arabella is also stuck with a female sidekick, a middle-aged wealthy chaperone, whose characterization lacks plausibility. Venus has a frog-like intelligent species, and those natives play a key role in the last two-thirds of the story, but we don't really see any other Venusian flora and fauna. Apart from the Venusians, the adventures might as well be taking place in a tropical jungle on Earth. Recommended with severe reservations.Tags : Arabella and the Battle of Venus (The Adventures of Arabella Ashby) [David D. Arabella and the Battle of Venus The Adventures of Arabella Ashby David D Levine 9780765382825 Books Reviews
It is hard to follow up a novel such as Arabella of Mars, a tour de force of Victorian steam punk space opera with a bit of romance and breaking of societal rules, but Arabella and the Battle of Venus not only matches the action and ingenuity of its predecessor but also manages to hold its own. After her previous adventures of preventing war on Mars and masquerading as a boy to get there, Arabella is now awaiting her marriage to Captain Singh. However, her plans are waylaid when word that her fiancé has been captured by the French and is a prisoner on Venus. Naturally, Arabella undertakes the task of rescuing him, though this time, unable to resurrect her disguise of a boy, she brings along the Lady Corey as a chaperone.
In this sequel, a lot of familiar faces return and are mixed in with the new. The crew of the Diana is present and is joined by the Touchstone, the privateer that Arabella hires, and its crew. Mixed in to this wonderfully drawn cast are a very real threat as Napoleon and his wars, and the conquests that inspired them, have been remade to fit Arabella’s world of a Victorian space age. Filled with subterfuge on several levels and carefully laid plans, our heroine navigates a story that doesn’t go smoothly in her attempt to free her beloved and his crew.
Still maintaining the humor and level of action of Mars, this addition is a tad darker, maybe because the enemy here is all the more real. Battle of Venus has the same abrupt, but happy, ending as you may have come to expect, with the reader hoping to turn the page and find another chapter, but I wasn’t left disappointed. I am left looking forward to more of Arabella’s adventures with her Captain Singh by her side.
I couldn’t put it down. Napoleon didn’t have a chance against Arabella. Looking forward to the next book which is out soon.
I enjoyed this second book in the series greatly. As a French speaker the use of French phrases made it even more enjoyable.
A great sequel. The action and emotions run high, as the hero rushes to save the man she loves. The times, the customs, and the language all show the deep research the author did before he wrote. This series sets a fantastic universe against which to plot the action. Well worth reading.
What a great continuation of the Arabella saga! We get the same fantastic wit and action, plus we finally see a fleet battle in interplanetary space. As a connoisseur of explosions and battlespace mayhem, this filled in the only things I felt were missing in the first book. And it still has all the adventure, harrowing dilemmas, and daring escapes of Arabella of Mars. That, plus a plausible, convincing obstacle to Arabella and Captain Singh’s romance made this the perfect adventure book. A less worthy author couldn’t have pulled this last one off without making it tedious—we’ve all read adventure series where new, progressively more contrived barriers appear between the romantic leads in every book—but Levine knows exactly how to play it, and keeps the romantic subplot both tense and believable. Do not miss this book!
